This article was updated on August 6th, 2020 at 05:57 am

For any blogger or search engine optimization (SEO) professional, keyword research is highly important. Strong keyword research allows web pages to be ranked higher on the search engine results pages. This ranking blesses the website with more traffic, which translates into more leads and conversions for the business. An interesting article by Backlinko even stated that “keyword research is just market research for the 21st century.”

5 Keyword Research Tools for 2018

If you are looking for the latest tools that can provide you relevant keywords to help you analyze and assess your competition and stay ahead in the market, I have a list for you.

1. Ahrefs Keyword Explorer

Powered by clickstream data and database updates with fresh keywords every month, Ahrefs Keyword Explorer is a powerful tool for keyword research that has left all the other tools behind, with the maximum number of keyword suggestions. To make things easy, Ahrefs allows users to filter the entire list of keyword suggestions by keyword difficulty and search volume. The tool uses unique keyword metrics, such as clicks, return rate and clicks per search, to narrow down the list of keyword suggestions, not found on any other tool today.

2. SEMrush

With over 1,000,000 users across the world, SEMrush has long been one of my favorite SEO tools. It is has suggested over 440,000 keywords till date. To determine the keyword difficulty, SEMrush considers the authority of the domains that are showing up on the results page. Instead of giving you the search volume numbers for the past month, the tool gives you a decimal score. The highest search volume for the month is awarded a score of 1 point.

3. SERPstat

With 149,003 keyword suggestions, which is only 35% of what SEMrush shows, SERPstat is a fairly good keyword research tool that provides some good filtering options. However, the user will not be able to sort or filter the list of suggestions in terms of keyword difficulty. The tool has added a metric in June 2017, with which it uses backlink profiles of the top10 search results, their Page Rank and Trust Rank, and on-page factors such as backlink profiles, keywords in title and URL, to estimate the keyword difficulty.

4. Uber Suggest

Uber Suggest is one of the simplest keyword research tools available today. Uber Suggest is a quick way to find new keywords that are not available in the Google Keywords planner. The site provides tons of keyword ideas for SEO, PPC and various content marketing campaigns. This keyword suggestion tool is created by Alessandro Martin, head of SEO at Reprise Media, Italy. Uber Suggest is absolutely free, but this does not compromise the quality of its performance. It pulls data from Google Suggest and other reliable sources and does not lock this good stuff behind a paywall.

5. Long Tail Pro

Rated one of the best SEO tools by top industry experts, Long Tail Pro is used by over 70,000 marketers around the globe. Using this tool, you can find low competition keywords in even the most competitive niches. During this process, the user gains access to detailed SEO metrics to accurately assess keyword competition. When it comes to keyword difficulty levels, Long Tail Pro was found to be the second most accurate tool, after Ahrefs.

So, do your keyword research well and give your website an edge over the competition in 2018.
