Ep 10: How to Make Money with AdSense

This article was updated on August 6th, 2020 at 05:57 am

Placing ads on their blog is the most common way bloggers make money, just like I did. Each time an ad on their website is clicked by a visitor, the blogger is paid for that click. Nowadays, bloggers have the options to choose from the endless advertising programs. However, I would recommend you to go with the most popular one, Google AdSense.

Currently one of the most popular advertising programs on the Internet, Google AdSense is a cost-per-click based advertising program, launched by Google in mid-2003. The program allows you to advertise third-party products or services to your visitors to monetize your website traffic.

As published on their website, Google AdSense paid out nearly $10 billion to its publishers in 2015. That’s a lot of money.

How it Works

Google AdSense works through a very simple process. Webmasters start by creating an Adsense account and insert a small amount of code or HTML into their webpages. As a result, targeted ads, relevant to the content of the website, are displayed on their webpages. The website owners then get paid for every click their visitors make on those ads.

Since Google acts as an intermediary between advertisers and publishers, both can stay assured  of security.

Monetary Benefit

Revenue generated by advertisers is shared by Google and the publishers. In general, publishers get 65%-70% of the click amount, which can range between $0.20 and $15.

The commission for publishers can get significantly reduced to less than $1 per click, if there is too much competition in the niche. However, given that millions of advertisers are competing for ad space in real-time auctions, your website space will be in demand all the time. This means more relevant ads and more ad spaces filled, which means more money.

Use the Google AdWords Keyword Tool to find the most promising niches, in terms of cost per click, competition and traffic volume.

How Ads are Chosen

Ads displayed on websites can be text, display image, rich media ads like dynamic image ads, video ads, HTML ads or responsive ads that automatically adapt to different screen sizes, link units and matched content.

Before posting the ads on your website, Google AdSense makes sure that the ad is high quality, while all its content is family safe and appropriate for audiences of all ages.

How to Maximize Earnings

So, what is your task as a blogger? To help ads on your website get maximum clicks, of course. But, how do you do that?

The best thing about Google AdSense is that it gives publishers full control over the ads they allow on their website. They can decide the location of the ad, change its look and feel to match the site, and more. So, make sure you make the most of this opportunity, since the amount you earn will depend not only on the quality and uniqueness of the content on your website, but also where the ads are located on the page and how well they match your audience’s interests.

All this will also help with more targeted traffic to your site, which can lead to more clicks and thus more money.

There’s a whole lot of tips and tricks available to maximize your AdSense earnings. We’ll learn more of that in the upcoming articles.
