Ep 5: How to Choose the Right Theme for Your Blog

This article was updated on August 6th, 2020 at 05:57 am

Last week, I woke up feeling totally low on energy. I didn’t feel like doing anything, not even getting out of bed. I was surprised to see how my mood changed almost instantly when I wore a yellow T-shirt. Yes, colors can have a significant impact on our mood.

According to WebPageFX, neatly 85% consumers cite color as a major reason for their buying decisions. It was also added that if you put an advertisement in color, it is 42% more likely to be read in comparison with an ad that is black and white. The same color psychology is applicable to the theme of a blog, if you wish to increase conversions, says a blog post by Kissmetrics.

A good theme that has an appealing design in the perfect blend of colors not only makes a good first impression to your visitor but also helps SEO. Since not all themes are created equal, you’ll need to choose wisely which theme would reflect the messaging of your blog the best.

Here are five ways you can get yourself a great WordPress theme for your blog. It certainly worked for me.

Check Out Themes Here

1. Keep it Simple

When choosing a WordPress theme, it is easy to get tempted by all those interestingly complex layouts, colors and flashy animations. However, not all bloggers require those things. You need to focus on your goal and choose a design that establishes the message you want to convey through your blog. Well, I am not asking you to make it boring, just simple. An overly complicated theme will only confuse the viewer and take away from your message.

2. Compatible with all Browsers

Today, internet users have so many browser options to choose from, such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera and more seem to be emerging everyday, which is great. However, this is an issue for developers who now have to ensure that websites are compatible with as many browsers as possible, since there might be certain features that may break in a certain browner. Bloggers should look for themes that are rigorously tested for their comparability by using sophisticated browser compatibility testing tools. The theme should look perfect, no matter what browser or device the visitor is using.

3. Supports all Popular Plugins

A WordPress site needs plugins to perform at its best. And, WordPress does have the greatest amount of SEO plugins available, which offers distinctive advantages for websites and blogs. The theme should be able to support the plugins you wish to use, be it Yoast SEO, W3 Total Cache, or others.

4. Responsive Themes

If we have to read a blog in the middle of the night, not many of us will make the effort to open up our laptops. People are increasingly using their smartphones to surf the internet. This has raised the importance of choosing a responsive theme. Such themes smoothly adjust their layout based on the screen size and resolution. It also prevents the blogger from creating a separate mobile version of their blog.

5. Multilingual WordPress Theme

Given that global reach is a goal most of us bloggers have, we know that not everyone is as fluent in English. This is why it becomes important to choose a theme that supports translation, as well as multilingual WordPress plugins.

While this might not be an exhaustive list of things to look for in a theme, it certainly should get you off to a good start. Add other factors based on the type of blog you wish to run.
